GUWAHATI: NHPC (National Hydroelectric Power Corporation) is likely to commission two units of the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project (SLHP) in June this year. SLHP has as many as eight units, 250 MW each.
According to the Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy sources, the remaining six units of SLHP have a commissioning target of March 2024. After long protests against the mega dam, the project sufferred another setback in its construction works due to floods and landslides in 2022, including the Gerukamukh project site. The floods and landslides made NHPC suffer a loss of Rs 80-100 crore for repair works.
According to sources in the Ministry, the project spent Rs 17275.62 crore till November 2022. The project work remained stalled from December 2011-October 2019 due to protests by some stakeholders and pressure groups. The outbreak of Covid-19 also affected the project work. The work resumed following clearance from the NGT (National Green Tribunal) in 2019. The power generation capacity of the project is 2000 MW.
Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Project is the biggest of its kind undertaken in India. It is a run-of-river project on river Subansiri. The project is near North Lakhimpur along the border of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam.
