GUWAHATI, Nov 29: The government has not yet set a deadline to complete the verification process of documents for updating the tiol Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam.
Replying to a question by Silchar MP Sushmita Dev, Union minister of State for Home Affairs Hansraj Gangaram Ahir told Parliament today that the government has not fixed any specific date for finishing the document verification process.
“The verification of supporting documents submitted by NRC applicants, both within and outside Assam, is under progress,” he said.
Ahir added that the effect of Citizenship Act on NRC will depend on the exact provisions of the Amended Act.
The Supreme Court had earlier fixed January 2016 as the deadline for publishing the fil NRC. It had later instructed the NRC authorities to lay more emphasis on quality verification of documents submitted by applicants so that a correct document is published.
