GUWAHATI: After the seven cancer care hospitals inaugurated by the Prime Minister on April 24, 2022, Union Home Minister Amit Shah will inaugurate the Cardiothoracic & Neurosciences (CN Centre) under one roof on May 9 near the GMCH (Gauhati Medical College and Hospital).

The hospital will be open for patients from May 10. It is the first of its kind in the government sector in the Northeast.

As the then Health Minister in 2008, Himanta Biswa Sarma envisioned the blueprint of this super speciality hospital –an advanced Centre bringing the specialities of Cardiothoracic & Neurosciences (CN Center) under a single roof. Under his stewardship, the foundation stone was laid in 2008 with funds from the Central Government. The construction went on smoothly till 2012. However, from 2012 to 2016, due to unavoidable circumstances, the pace of the construction waned.

In 2016, under the renewed guidance of the then Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the construction of this massive undertaking gained traction. In 2019, with the infusion of additional funds, this new Cardiothoracic & Neurosciences (CN Center) became a reality. This CN Centre now can address specifically the specialities of Cardiology, CTVS, Neurology & Neurosurgery with the state of the art facilities, namely dedicated 24x7 functional CathLabs and Pacemaker implantation facilities, dedicated ICUs, Pre-& post-Operative Wards, 7 Modular Operation Theatres, High-End Operative Endoscopy and Neuro Navigation System, Sophisticated heart Lung Machine, 3 Tesla MRI, 256 Slice CT Machine, High-End Neurophysiological Investigations, fully automated dry Chemistry and Hormone Analyser and WIFI-enabled smart building.

Talking to The Sentinel, Health Minister Keshab Mahanta said, "The hospital is ready to serve people. We will provide affordable treatment."

This super speciality hospital will reduce the rush of patients to the GMCH, which serves around one lakh indoor patients and eight lakh outdoor patients annually.
