GUWAHATI: A major change is in the offing for students in Assam who are set to take the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) examinations in 2024, keeping in mind the changing times and the trends prevalent in the rest of the country.

The Board of Secondary Education, Assam (SEBA), which conducts the HSLC matriculation exams, made the announcement about the scheduled date of the exam and that Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) sheets would be used for four subjects, each carrying 50% of the total marks in the subject.

The changes were mentioned in a letter written to all inspectors of schools in the state, informing them that the HSLC Examination 2024 would be held in the first week of February 2024 and that personalized OMR sheets would be used for the first time in this exam for objective-type questions.

The letter, signed by the secretary of SEBA, informed school inspectors that personalized OMR sheets will be introduced in the HSLC Examination for answering objective-type questions, which would carry 50% of the total marks, carrying one mark each in the case of core subjects, i.e., English (CI), General Mathematics (C2), General Science (C3) and Social Science (C4).

SEBA feels that the students are already familiar with the OMR system since this system is being continuously used for the evaluation of the students in Gunotsav. As the OMR sheets will be personalized, there will be one OMR sheet in the name of a particular candidate, the letter states. The board also feels that these new introductions have to be informed to all students well in advance so that they can prepare for the changed system.

However, it was informed that separate answer scripts containing 16 pages will be provided as before for the remaining 50% of questions.

Further, SEBA also prescribed the eligibility criteria for the students appearing in the HSLC Examination in 2024, which the Board says should be noted by each school. The eligibility criteria state that the student should fulfil certain requirements to take the exam: 1) The students who appeared in Unit Test 1 (except those students who were unsuccessful in the HSLC Examination, 2023) and are regularly attending classes and who will appear in subsequent examinations like Unit Test II, the Half Yearly Examination, and the Pre-Board Examination. 2) The unsuccessful candidates of the HSLC examination in 2023 who are re-admitted in Class-X but could not appear in Unit Test-1 have to attend classes regularly and also appear in the half-yearly examination, Unit Test-II, and the pre-board examination.
