UDALGURI/GUWAHATI: Only the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) can save Assam from infiltrations, said Union Home Minister Amit Shah and urged the masses to vote for the BJP and its allies.
Addressing three election rallies at Jonai, Majuli and Udalguri, Shah said that the Congress must tell the people as to how it would check infiltrations from across the border. "When our government was doing development works in Assam, the Congress forged an alliance with a communal force for the Assembly elections. However, the masses have realised that the Congress-AIUDF (All India United Democratic Front) alliance will not be able to curb infiltrations and corruption. Hence, the people will once again vote to power the BJP-led alliance."
"Before the 2016 Assembly elections, the BJP government had promised to make Assam free from corruption, agitation, infiltration and terrorism. And, we were successful in achieving successes in all these fronts with the cooperation of the people here," claimed Shah.
The Union Home Minister alleged that during the Congress' rule in Assam, terrorists killed a large number of civilians and security personnel but no action was taken. But in recent years, over 2,000 militants have surrendered and deposited thousands of arms and ammunition, he added.
Shah announced, "The (BJP) government during the past five years has achieved a lot. The politics of guns ended after signing of the BTR (Bodoland Territorial Region) accord. And now, we are carrying out development activities across Assam including the BTR. We will implement all the articles of BTR accord within 2022. Another accord for Karbi Anglong has been also prepared.
"The BJP government has also done a lot to preserve the pride of Assam by installing statues of Kanaklata Barua and opening University on the name of Sati Sadhini."
He also stressed on the welfare schemes implemented for the workers in the State's tea gardens. Accusing the Congress for "not doing any significant development for Assam", he said that the NDA government has allocated Rs 53,000 crore for the construction of 20,000-km roadways; Rs 46,000 crore invested for various projects in the Gas and Oil sector besides constructing six mega bridges over the Brahmaputra River.
Appreciating the efforts of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Health & Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Shah said that in COVID-19 management, the Assam government's performance was excellent.
Sonowal, who accompanied Shah in the three election rallies, is seeking re-election from Majuli — the largest river island of the world.
Addressing the gathering, BTR Chief Pramod Boro asserted that all the 12 seats in BTR will be won by the BJP and UPPL allies. Among those present on the occasion were the BJP candidate for 64 Panery Constituency, Biswajit Daimary; the BJP candidate for Dhekiajuli Constituency, Ashok Shinghal; and the UPPL candidate for 69 Udalguri Constituency, Gobinda Basumatary.
The 47 Assembly constituencies, including Majuli, would go to the polls in the first phase on March 27. The 126-member Assam Assembly polls would be held in three phases. In the second phase on April 1, polling will take place for 39 seats and in the last and third phase on April 6, elections will be held for the remaining 40 constituencies. The results will be declared on May 2. (With inputs from IANS)
