GUWAHATI: The All Assam ME Teachers’ Association has expressed its dissatisfaction with the failure of the government to appoint head teachers in over 2,000 upper primary schools in the state for more than five years.

The association’s president, Dwipen Sarma, said, “The association has been advocating for resolving the problems and difficulties of primary education institutions in the state through dialogue. We have had several discussions with the Commissioner and Secretary of Education, the Director of Elementary Education (DEEO), and even the Education Minister on this issue. We discussed a nine-point charter of demands and submitted a memorandum to the Education Minister on August 30 and November 7. We have also had a detailed discussion with the Education Minister regarding the issues, including the appointment of head teachers in upper primary schools, issues of teachers’ earned leave, service rules for teachers, appointing tutors as regular teachers, regularising jobs for contractual and state pool teachers, payment of arrears, increasing the funds for infrastructural development, and arranging the Chief Minister’s special scholarship examinations, but to no avail.”

The association further said, “The appointment of head teachers is a must. For the last 5 to 7 years, there have been no appointments of head teachers in more than 2,000 upper primary schools. Instead of head teachers, in-charge teachers are doing the duty.”
