GUWAHATI: Inclusion of a chapter on Padma Shri Jadav Payeng in the curriculum of one of the leading schools in the US has inspired students and academicians across Assam to know more about him.

JadavPayeng, hailed as the 'Forest Man of India' is known globally for converting thousand acres of barren sand bar into a forest and biodiversity hotspot in Assam. The students of 'Green Hills School' in Bristol in USA recently came to know about Payeng; and incorporated his work in the Class-VI curriculum as a part of 'Ecology and Environmental Science'. Documentaries demonstrating his course of life are being shown to the students.

"I have heard about Payeng but did not study much about him. But the recent development about him in a US school has excited me to know more about him," said Siddhartha Sarma, a student of Don Bosco School here.

An official in the Board of Secondary Education, Assam (SEBA) said that even though the Board has included chapters on JadavPayeng in the textbooks of Classes IX & X, the development in USA will obviously enhance students' interest.

On the other hand, the majority of academicians said it is time for the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to include JadavPayeng's work in its curriculum. "The State Government should write to the CBSE and ICSE to include chapters on Payeng in the national school syllabus," said SadiqulAlam, a retired college teacher.
