GUWAHATI: "If the party cannot perform its responsibility toward people, people will dump us like the Congress. People voted us to power only with the faith that we will do our best to fulfil their aspirations," Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

The Chief Minister was addressing the executive committee meeting of the State BJP at Diphu today. He said, "We will continue to be in power so long the people have faith in us. So, we need to dedicate ourselves to the services of the people. Assam has no opposition parties now. However, if we fail to perform our duty toward the public, we will give birth to the opposition in the state. Success often breeds pride. And we need to remember that pride comes before a fall. A government that takes the people along can only travel long."

The Chief Minister appealed to all the party members to work for the people, irrespective of praise or criticism. "The State Government has been working for the past one year toward this end. We have focused on rural economy, land rights to indigenous people, making benefits reaching target beneficiaries, the wellbeing of tea workers, etc.," he said. He added, "Our target is to bring the 27 lakh farmers under the ambit of PM Krishak Sanman Nidhi. Under this Nidhi, a farmer gets Rs 6,000 a year. We have brought only 14 lakh farmers under the Nidhi."

The Chief Minister said, "We have solved the land-related problems of seven lakh families under Mission Basundhara-I. In Mission Basundhara-II, we will ensure land rights for the indigenous people of the state. We have deleted around seven lakh ineligible names from the database of ration cards. We have waived microfinance loans of 11 lakh women. We will waive such loans of five lakh more women soon. The target is to waive microfinance loans of 27 lakh women. We are increasing the amount of Orunudoi scheme as well as the number of its beneficiaries. We will clear the dues of HPC employees by June 30, 2022."

He said, "In the past five years, tea garden managements got around Rs 1,000 crore as compensation for the land acquired for the construction of highways. We have made it a rule now that the garden management will have to spend a portion of the compensation amount for the wellbeing of tea workers."
