GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will interact with 150 prominent citizens from the Muslim community on Sunday to mobilize support to implement the State's population control policy.

The interaction programme will be held at the Assam Administrative Staff College at Khanapara from 2 pm on Sunday. The participants (all of them are indigenous Assamese Muslims) of the meeting are from different districts.

In 2017, the Assam Government drafted a policy to prevent the burgeoning population in the State. The two-child norm is a logical progression of the "Population and Women Empowerment Policy of Assam" drafted five years ago. The government has already decided that individuals with more than two children will not be eligible for government jobs after January 1, 2021. The Chief Minister recently said that since his government already started implementing the population control policy, the selection of beneficiaries for all welfare schemes would hinge on the two-child norm.

The Chief Minister recently said that the two-child policy is the only way to eradicate poverty and illiteracy among the State's Muslim populace. Sarma also claimed that organizations working with the Muslim community had welcomed his proposal of adopting good family planning norms.
