Rajya Sabha poll: Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal files nominations

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal filed his nominations today for the Rajya Sabha seat that had fallen vacant following the resignation of Biswajit Daimary as an MP after his election to the state Assembly.

GUWAHATI: Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal filed his nominations today for the Rajya Sabha seat that had fallen vacant following the resignation of Biswajit Daimary as an MP after his election to the state Assembly.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, AGP president Atul Bora, BTC CEM Pramod Boro, state BJP president Bhabesh Kalita, a few Cabinet ministers and MLAs of the ruling alliance accompanied Sonowal while filing his nomination papers.

The last date for filing nominations is September 22, 2021. The scrutiny is on September 23. According to the schedule of the Election Commission of India, the election will be on October 4, 2021. However, the Opposition made it clear that they would not field any candidate for the Rajya Sabha seat vacant in the state.

Sonowal said, "I have filed my nomination papers with blessings from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, national BJP president JP Nadda, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, all national BJP leaders, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, state BJP president Bhabesh Kalita and MLAs of the ruling coalition, besides the people of Assam. I express my gratitude to the BJP leadership for allowing me to serve the people.

"I seek blessings from the people of Majuli. My responsibility towards the people of Majuli will always be there."

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, "The Opposition said that they would not field any candidate for the vacant Rajya Sabha seat in the state. I thank them for this cooperation. I hope Union Minister Sonowal will work for Assam and other states of the Northeast."
