Rajya Sabha polls for one seat from Assam on March 1: Election Commission of India

GUWAHATI: The ECI (Election Commission of India) on Thursday announced March 1 (Monday) as the poll date for one Rajya Sabha (RS) seat from Assam. The Chief Electoral Officer, Assam, Nitin Khare has been appointed as 'Observer' for this election. The ECI has also directed the CS (Chief Secretary) of Assam to depute a senior State government officer to ensure that the election is held following all the COVID-19 protocols.

The election notification will be issued on February 11. The last date for the filing of nominations is February 18. Scrutiny of the nomination papers will be held the next day. The last date for withdrawal of candidature is February 22.

Polls will be held from 9 am to 4 pm on March 1. Counting of votes will be held after 5 pm the same day. The entire election procedure will be over by March 3.

The term of the newly elected RS member from Assam will be up to April 9, 2026.

Assam has seven RS seats. A seat became vacant on November 21, 2020, following the resignation of former BPF (Bodoland People's Front) member Biswajit Daimary. He subsequently joined the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party).

Mentionably, the MLAs (Members of Legislative Assembly) cast their votes to elect a member to the RS. Assam Assembly has 126 seats.

However as on date, the Assam Assembly has 118 legislators. Presently, the House has 60 BJP MLAs followed by 19 from the Congress, 14 from the AIUDF (All India United Democratic Front), 13 from the AGP (Asom Gana Parishad), 11 from the BPF, and one Independent member.
