GUWAHATI: The State Environment and Forest Department today distributed around 3.25 lakh saplings from the Veterinary Ground at Khanapara here to script a Guinness World Record of ‘distributing the largest number of saplings in one day at a single venue’ in the presence of the representatives of the Guiness Book of World Records.

The state is trying its best to script Guinness world records in nine categories under its Amrit Brikshya Andolan-2023. The state aims at setting some new records and breaking some of the existing ones.

Women members of self-help groups and students from various schools came to Khanapara today to collect two saplings each. Some security force personnel also collected saplings today. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was present at the distribution of saplings. He himself lent a helping hand in the distribution of saplings. Departmental Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary and senior officials of the department were also present at the sapling distribution.

Speaking to the media, the Chief Minister said, “We attempted to set a record for the largest line or spiral of saplings by making a 22-kilometre-long one. We have tried to break the record for the largest number of sapling distributions from a single venue in a single day. The Amrit Brikshya Andolan will continue until September 17, when people in the state will plant one crore saplings and upload them to the portal to make the largest photo album of people planting trees. We expect to script all nine records. We will try to plant three crore saplings next year.”

The State Government released Rs 49 crore for the Amrit Brikshya Andolan. The people who will plant saplings will get Rs 100 each and Rs 200 after two years for proper upbringing of the saplings. All the saplings distributed are from commercial trees.
