GUWAHATI: The process for the recruitment of 5,320 posts in lower and upper primary schools in the state is on tenterhooks, waiting for the outcome of a writ petition filed in the Gauhati High Court.

The Director of Elementary Education (DEE), Assam, issued two advertisements: (i) advertisement-A No. 255733/10 for the filling up of 3,887 posts of assistant teachers of lower primary schools of the state, as well as (ii) advertisement-B No. 255733/15 for the filling up of 1,433 posts of assistant teachers and science teachers of upper primary schools of the state.

In a petition (WP-C 1615/2023), ten petitioners, who are Assam TET-passed and have applied for those advertised posts, challenged the Notice No. E-255733/16 issued on February 16, 2023, issued by the DEE, Assam, by which it is notified that the conditions of recruitment specified in the advertisements A and B issued on February 11, 2023, noted above, have been partially modified as "the Language-I or Language-II of the CTET-qualified candidates shall match the medium of instruction of the school, wherein the candidate wishes to apply."

The bench of Justice Manash Ranjan Pathak asked the Commissioner and Secretary of the Department of Elementary Education, Assam, and the Director of Elementary Education to file their affidavits in the matter on or before May 11, 2023.

The bench ordered that any appointments made pursuant to the aforementioned Advertisement-A No. 255733/10 and Advertisement-B No. 255733/15, both issued on February 11, 2023, shall be subject to the outcome of this writ petition and/or further orders of the Court.

The petition has been listed for its next hearing on May 12, 2023.
