GUWAHATI: The State Government cannot say when it will reopen schools as it depends on the Covid-19 situation.

Talking to the media here on Wednesday, State Health Minister Keshab Mahanta said, "We cannot say when schools will reopen. So long the Covid-19 situation doesn't improve, we cannot say with certainty when schools will reopen. It depends on the Covid-19 situation.

"Coronavirus infection goes on. Two districts of the state are still containment zones. There is still a ban on inter-district movement. When the Covid-19 situation improves in the government can think of reopening schools.

"Only the Health Department can never bring the Covid-19 situation under control. The people will have to cooperate with the government by not crowding unnecessarily, besides following Covid-appropriate behaviour. In some of the districts, the Covid-19 situation is a cause of concern."

In the past ten days from July 18-27, the Kamrup(M) district alone had 1,976 Covid positive cases. Following Kamrup (M) are — 1,441 in Golaghat, 1,014 in Lakhimpur, 914 in Dibrugarh, 860 in Jorhat, 704 in Nagaon, 696 in Kamrup, 653 in Sivasagar etc. Only three districts in the state had two-digit figure positive cases in the past ten days – 99 in Dhubri, 75 in Hailakandi and 15 in South Salmara.

Meanwhile, the department inoculated 2,43,682 vaccine doses till 10 pm on Tuesday alone. On Wednesday morning, the department had 1,26,920 doses of vaccines in stock.
