GUWAHATI: The Rs 501.40-crore minority scholarship scam in Assam has been handed over to the CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation).

Addressing the media here on Wednesday, Assam Minority Development Board Chairman MuminulAowal said, "I wrote a letter to Union Minority Affairs Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi in September this year requesting him to hand over the minority students' scholarship scam in Assam to the CBI. On November 8, 2020 Naqvi handed over the investigation of the scam to the CBI. Along with Assam, minority scholarship scams in Bihar, Jarkhand and Punjab have also been handed over to the CBI.

"There are cases in various police stations in the State against the scam. I did request the Chief Minister to investigate the scam. At the directive of the Chief Minister, the CID (Criminal Investigation Department) is investigating the scam. The investigation has led to the arrest of many people.

"School headmasters, Bank officials, Inspectors of Schools and brokers are involved in swindling the money of the minority students' scholarship in the name of a large number of fake students. The scam was rampant in Morigaon, Nagaon, Barpeta, Dhubri, Golaghat, Goalpara, Darrang, Karimganj and Kamrup districts."
