 STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: The State Government has framed rules for NRI and NRI-sponsored candidates’ quota in MBBS and BDS courses in the medical colleges in Assam, reserving seven percent of the total of the remaining MBBS seats after excluding 15 percent of the all-India quota, the Central Pool, the North Eastern States quota, the Royal Government of Bhutan quota, etc.

This is compared to the State Cabinet’s June 15, 2023 proposal of 10 percent reservation of the remaining MBBS/BDS seats for NRI and NRI-sponsored candidates after the deduction of 15 percent all-India quota, Central Pool, North Eastern States’ quota, Royal Government of Bhutan quota, etc.

The government framed the rules and amended the Medical Colleges and Dental Colleges of Assam (Regulations of Admission into 1st Year MBBS or BDS Courses) Rules, 2017, and framed its amended version for 2023.

According to the Medical Colleges and Dental Colleges of Assam (Regulations of Admission into 1st Year MBBS or BDS Courses) Rules, 2023, NRI or NRI-sponsored candidates shall have to qualify the NEET undergraduate examination of the same session. The eligibility of NRI or NRI-sponsored candidates under this category shall be actual NRI candidates who originally belong to the State of Assam or any other state or Union Territory of India, or children of NRIs who originally belong to the State of Assam or any other state or Union territory of India. NRI-sponsored candidates are either a real brother or sister, a real brother or sister of the father, i.e., a paternal uncle or aunt; a real brother or sister of the mother, i.e., a maternal uncle or aunt; a parental grandfather or paternal grandmother; a maternal grandfather or maternal grandmother; or first-degree paternal or maternal cousins.

The selected candidates under this quota shall have to pay a tuition fee of 25,000 USD for the first year and 22,500 USD per year for the subsequent years during their period of study.

With the publication of the gazette notification of this amendment, the Medical Colleges and Dental Colleges of Assam (Regulations of Admission into 1st Year MBBS or BDS Courses) Rules, 2023, have come into effect in the state.
