Sahitya Akademi awards: 5 winners from Assam for the year 2023

The Sahitya Akademi today announced the names of the winners of two categories of awards for the year 2023.

GUWAHATI: The Sahitya Akademi today announced the names of the winners of two categories of awards for the year 2023. Five writers from Assam have won the prestigious Sahitya Akademi awards this year.

The executive board of the Sahitya Akademi under the chairmanship of its president Madhav Kaushik approved the selection of 20 winners for the Sahitya Akademi Yuva Puraskar 2023. Jitu Gitartha (Assamese language), Mainaosri Daimary (Bodo language) and Naina Adhikari (Nepali language) from Assam are among the 20 award winners. Jitu Gitartha won the award for his collection of short stories titled Mon Mon Tora, Mainaosri Daimary for the poetry collection Som, Jiu, Arw and Naina Adhikari for the poetry collection Ghat-Pratighatka Udgarharu.

The awards in Manipuri, Maithili and Sanskrit will be declared at a later date. The award is in the form of a casket containing an engraved copper plaque and a cheque of Rs 50,000 and will be presented to the awardees at a special function to be held at a later date.

The executive board of the Sahitya Akademi also approved the selection of 22 writers for the Sahitya Akademi’s Bal Sahitya Puraskar 2023. Rothindranath Goswami has won the award in the Assamese language for his novel Powalmoni Aru Chichingar Duhxahaxik Abhiyan and Pratima Nandi Narzaree in the Bodo language for the collection of short stories Gosaini Gwjwn Nwjwr.

There is no award in the Kashmiri language this year. The award in the Manipuri language will be declared at a later date. The awards relate to books first published during the five years immediately preceding the year of the award (i.e. between January 1, 2017, and December 31, 2021).

The award is in the form of a casket containing an engraved copper plaque and a cheque of Rs 50,000 and will be presented to the awardees at a special function to be held at a later date.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma congratulated all the award winners from Assam for enriching the language and literature of the State.
