GUWAHATI: The school amalgamation process-the merger of smaller schools with base schools-in the state goes on four different criteria based on distance. The merger of LP schools takes place only within a radius of one km, upper primary schools within a radius of three km, high schools and high madrassas within a radius of five km,

and higher secondary schools and junior colleges within a radius of seven km. The number of students enrolled also has much to do with the school amalgamation process.

According to the Assam Education (Provincialization of Services of Teachers and Reorganization of Educational Institutions) Act, 2017, a base school means either an existing provincialized or a venture educational institution identified for the purpose of provincializing the services of teachers and/or tutors, as the case may be.

The purpose of the merger of schools with base schools is to fulfil and maintain the norms and standards of education institutions, including PTR (pupil-teacher ratio) and all other statutory requirements, for the purpose of reorganizing the education sector at all levels.

According to the Department of School Education, it has already identified the base schools with the names of only those teaching staff and non-teaching staff whose services have been provincialized.
