GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma virtually flagged off the first consignment of Nano Urea, developed by Indian Farmers' Fertilizers Cooperative Limited (IFFCO), to Assam through a video conference held at his office today.

IFFCO has developed nano urea for the first time in the world. It is going to substitute a major portion of the conventional urea.

The Chief Minister termed this initiative of IFFCO as 'Game Changer' in the history of modern agriculture across the globe because of its many positive benefits. He congratulated IFFCO for its innovative endeavour and hope that in the future also it will continue its impressive performance to bring about a paradigm shift in the agriculture sector.

Mentioning about Prime Minister's unique vision for the welfare of the farmers, the Chief Minister said that the Government of India has spent about Rs 55,000 crore towards subsidy for urea alone during 2019-20. He hoped that introduction of Nano Urea will save a huge amount of money from the public exchequer. Transportation, handling and warehousing cost will also substantially reduce as only one bottle (500 ml) of Nano Urea will supply an equivalent amount of crop nutrient that one bag (45 kg) conventional urea provides, he added.

Sarma urged IFFCO to come forward for setting up a Nano Urea plant in the state. Pointing to the acute crisis of urea and other fertilizers in the state from time to time, he asked IFFCO to look after the issue of fertilizer shortages in the state and take initiatives for streamlining the fertilizer distribution channels for smooth supply of urea and other fertilizers to the farmers of the state.

Agriculture Minister Atul Bora and Dr Udai Shanker Awasthi, Managing Director, IFFCO also spoke, a press release said.
