Asom Sattra Mahasabha to PM Modi: Set-up Sankardev Cultural Centres in Major Cities of India

The Asom Sattra Mahasabha (ASM) has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting him to set up 'Srimanta Sankardev Cultural Centres' in the major cities of India.

In a letter to the Prime Minister, the Mahasabha secretary-general Kushum Kumar Mahanta said that establishing 'Srimanta Sankardev Cultural Centres' across India would be a noble step, and this would also help the rest of India know about the life, works, preaching and ideology of the great Bhakti Movement leader and Assam's greatest social and cultural reformer and Vaishnavite saint Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev.

Recalling Prime Minister Modi and other senior political leaders of the state and the Centre remembering Srimanta Sankardev as one of Assam's greatest leaders and his contributions in forming the Assamese society and culture, during their speeches in the run-up to the Assam Assembly elections of 2021, the Mahasabha expressed gratitude and hoped that Prime Minister Modi will pay heed to their request and do the needful in setting up the Centres.

In its letter, the Mahasabha also mentioned Mahapurush Sri Sri Madhabdev, the greatest disciple of Srimanta Sankardev who set up Xatras across Assam and in Cooch Behar in Bengal to preserve the teach Asom Sattra Mahasabha (ASM), Srimanta Sankardev Cultural Centres'ings of Gurujana Srimanta Sankardev.

The Assam Sattra Masabha is a socio-cultural organization that serves as the umbrella organization for the Xatras (Vaishnavite monasteries) of Assam and works for the preservation and propagation of the teachings of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev. The Mahasabha was founded in 1915.
