Demand for creation of headmasters’ posts by May 21 still stands

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: The ASPTA (Assam State Primary Teachers’ Association) is refusing to cooperate with the State Government in its Shiksha Setu Programme, and said it will not cooperate till the government creates headmasters’ posts in primary schools by May 21.

A training programme for the Shiksha Setu programme is going on.Through the Shiksha Setu programme, the government provided tablets to all the government schools and provincialized schools.

Shiksha Setu Programme is run under the Shiksha Setu Axom portal launched by Education Minister Ranuj Pegu on April 24, 2023. Under the programme, each primary school got a tablet from the department to run the portal. The portal has been initiated to capture all details regarding staff as well as students.

ASPTA secretary general, Ratul Chandra Goswami, said, “The association will not cooperate in the Shiksha Setu programme until the creation of headmasters’ posts in primary schools. On May 8, the Education Department issued an order that, for the Shiksha Setu Programme, a training programme would be organized at block level. However, primary teachers in every education block are not participating in support of the demand. And we will not cooperate until May 21.”

Goswami further said, “If the government does not issue the order for the creation of headmasters’ posts in primary schools by May 21, we will return the tablets to the Block Elementary Education Officers (BEEOs) of the government from May 22 onwards.”

He said that the Education Department had taken the decision to create the headmasters’ posts, but the Finance Department rejected it. “This shows how the departments of the state do not coordinate with one another,” he said, and added, “Education Minister Ranoj Peju assured us of taking up the issue of the creation of headmasters’ posts in primary schools with the Finance Department to get approval. Five months have already elapsed, but again, nothing tangible came up.”

Goswami said that if the government threatens the teachers and asks them to attend the training programme, ASPTA will stage protests. “If the protests lead to academic losses, the government will be held responsible for that,” he said.
