SI Recruitment Scam: Bail to Nine Granted

One among the prime accused of the infamous Police Sub-Inspector Recruitment Exam Scam, Akshay Chand Baid was granted bail by Gauhati High Court

GUWAHATI, Jan 18: One of the prime accused in the Sub-Inspector (SI) recruitment exam paper leak scam of Assam Police — Akshay Chand Baid, and eight other accused have been granted bail by the Gauhati High Court (GHC) on Monday.

However, the names of the people are yet to be revealed. Akshay Chand Baid alias Akhiya is the owner of 'Akshay Telecommunication', the company which got a sub-contract for conducting the Police SI Recruitment Exam. He was in judicial custody since October 27, 2020.

Baid has been granted bail on health-related issues. Furthermore, Baid is currently undergoing medical treatment in Chennai. The bail has been granted by the Gauhati High Court for 15 days.

Following the resignation of the then State Level Police Recruitment Board (SLPRB) Chairperson Pradeep Kumar taking moral responsibility of the failure to conduct the examination in a free-and-fair manner, State DGP BhaskarJyotiMahanta was appointed as the new chairperson of SLPRB.

In the scam, brother of former Assam Chief Secretary Kumar Sanjay Krishna — Kumar Sanjit Krishna, an Assam Police Service (APS) officer, who was serving as SP (Foreigners Regional Registration Office) in Barpeta district, was arrested. Along with that DibanDeka, who was associated with the BJP but expelled upon his arrest, and former Assam Police DIG P.K. Dutta was arrested in the case.

On September 20, 2020, some 66,000 candidates were answering the questions when the exam was cancelled after the leaked question paper went viral on social media. (Agencies)
