Sleuths conduct searches over Guwahati Municipal Corporation de-siltation scam

4 ACCUSED PERSONS EVADING ARREST

GUWAHATI: The Chief Minister's Special Vigilance Cell on Saturday conducted search operations at the residences of the seven officials of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) and the office of the contractor who were arrested on Friday for corruption in connection with a de-siltation drive.

The searches were conducted in presence of the accused persons.

It may be recalled that those arrested by the Chief Minister's Special Vigilance Cell include Babulal Sarma, OSD of the GMC; Ashif Ahmed, Executive Engineer and Swacchata Officer of the GMC; Shankar Medhi, Executive Engineer, Division-I of the GMC; Ramakanta Saikia, Executive Engineer, Division-II of GMC; Alin Begum, Executive Engineer, Division-III of the GMC; Chittaranjan Dutta, Executive Engineer, Division-IV of the GMC; Hiranya Barman, Executive Engineer, Division-V of the GMC; and Dinesh Jaiswal, Director, M/s Dinsan Global Venture Pvt Ltd (contractor).

Meanwhile, sources said that four more persons are evading arrest in connection with the de-siltation scam. The quartet includes retired Chief Engineer of the GMC Tasdiqur Rahman, Executive Engineer Simanta Jyoti Baruah, Chartered Accountant Abhimanyu Medhi and contractor Mithu Agarwal.

On the other hand, the managing committee of the GMC has removed Babulal Sarma from the post of OSD of the GMC, the sources added.

The accused GMC officials are reported to have conspired with the contractors and refrained from implementing de-siltation works of drains etc., as per terms and conditions laid down in the tender documents. Payments were also released to the contractors without proper execution of works based on forged and fake weighbridge slips.
