GUWAHATI: With campaign coming to an end on Friday the stage is set for the second and final phase of panchayat poll in ten districts in the State. The polling will be from 7 am to 3 pm on December 9, 2018.
According sources in the State Election Commission (SEC), everything is ready for the second phase of the rural poll. While some polling officials bound for remote and interior areas have already left for their destinations on Friday, others will leave on Saturday.
In this phase of the rural poll, 64,21,518 voters are going to decide the fate of 35,056 candidates who are in fray. These candidates are vying for 169 ZPC members, 895 anchalik panchayat members, 895 gaon panchayat presidents and 8950 gaon panchayat members in this phase of the election.
There are as many as 9,428 polling stations in ten districts that are going to poll in this phase. While 4,481 of the 9,428 polling stations have been tagged safe, 3,081 have been tagged sensitive and 1,866 others have been tagged very sensitive.
On the last day of campaign for the rural poll on Friday, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, State Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, AGP president Atul Bora, former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta and other heavyweights campaigned in lower Assam districts.
The ten districts where the second phase of the rural poll is going to be held on December 9 are Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Cachar, Dhubri, Goalpara, Hailakandi, Hojai, Karimganj, South Salmara-Mankachar and Nalbari.
Meanwhile, repoll was held peacefully in 15 polling stations in seven districts on Friday. The voters’ turnout is 73.16 per cent. Repoll in 27 other polling stations is to be held on December 10 in Lakhimpur district.
The results of the panchayat poll will be declared on December 12.
