GUWAHATI: Xatradhikar Dr Pitambor Deva Goswami of Sri Sri Auniati Xatra of Majuli has appealed to the State Government to accord importance to the problem of erosion in Majuli, besides other problems afflicting the state.

Talking to The Sentinel on one year of the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led government in the state, the Xatradhikar said, "The Cabinet of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma started to work on an active note. We have seen the positivity in the Cabinet. In the first year, the government made it to the public through the war against drugs, operations against cattle smuggling and measures against thefts and looting. We have seen an impressive start. I request the Government and the Chief Minister to prioritize the erosion problem in Majuli, besides other problems afflicting the state."

The Xatradhikar said, "The Government's view toward Majuli should be clear. Even now, erosion poses a threat to the river island in many areas. We cannot feel secure as erosion takes place at a place which is one km away from Auniati Xatra. If the Brahmaputra gobbles up Auniati Xatra, around 30 villages will vanish from this river island."

The Xatradhikar further said, "Majuli is the nerve centre of the Xatriya culture. Already several xatras of this river island shifted to other places due to erosion. Further shifting of xatras from Majuli will deal a blow to the xatriya culture."
