GUWAHATI: It is challenging for the Assam Government to complete over 13 lakh PMAY-G (Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin) houses by March 2024. Nodal department, P&RD (Panchayat & Rural Development Department), is hopeful of meeting the target.

Statistics tabled in the Parliament in July 2022 showed Assam topping the list of states with over 13 lakh still-to-be-complete PMAY-G houses as of July 14, 2022. The statistics showed a target of 19,13,026 PMAY-G houses for Assam. Of them, the state could complete 5,82,272 houses by July 14 this year.

When contacted, a source in the P&RD said, "We are hopeful of meeting the target. In 2015-16, around 68,000 houses sanctioned under the then IAY (Indira Awas Yojana) remained incomplete. We will complete these houses by August or early September."

According to sources, if the State Government does not complete the 68,000 houses soon, the Centre will not release funds for them.

According to sources, the target of PMAY-G houses in Assam is big as the Chief Minister took up the matter with the Centre for the allotment of more PMAY-G houses to the state for the benefit of the poor. Will the P&RD achieve the target?

The PMAY-G is a rural housing scheme. It is a social welfare programme of the Government of India. It aims at providing pucca houses with some basic amenities in rural areas.
