GUWAHATI: Addressing the 15th Assam Legislative Assembly in its first session, newly-elected Speaker Biswajit Daimary has said that this august House will always think for the greater interest of the State and its people.

Daimary said, "Despite the pandemic situation in the State people of the State cooperated in the democratic process of election and entrusted the people's representatives to work for them. The new government has responsibilities towards the people, so have the new MLAs. All MLAs will have to work with responsibilities as the people of the State expect them to do.

"The people of the State have faith in the new government that can find new ways to solve the burning problems of the State. In this regard, every MLA has to cooperate with the government. Even the Opposition MLAs will have to guide the government.

"Inside the House, all MLAs will get equal rights to express their opinions. This House is the future of Assam and the Assamese. No MLA should deviate from the topic while discussing in the House so as not to waste the valuable time of the House.

"I request the government to make it a point that during floods people shouldn't rush to the government, rather the government should rush to the people. During floods, Water Resources Department officials are nowhere to be found. The government should manage floods the way it has managed COVID-19.

"I request all MLAs to use only modest language while discussing issues on the floor of the House. Unparliamentary language and behaviour in the House will only send the wrong message to the people."

Earlier in the day, Protem Speaker Phani Bhushan Choudhury declared the election of Daimary as the Speaker of the Assembly unopposed as he was the lone candidate to have submitted nomination papers. "I hope he'll lead the House as the Speaker following parliamentary rules."

Former Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said that Daimary has a grip over a whole lot of subjects. "I hope he'll be successful as the Speaker, and will give all equal dignity," he said.

Congress Legislature Party leader Debabrata Saikia said, "We'll engage ourselves in constructive discussion inside the House. We hope you will be an ideal person as the Speaker."

AGP president-cum-Minister Atul Bora expressed his hope that under Daimay's leadership the State Assembly would make stride.

Former Assembly Speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami, Minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass, Minister |UG Brahma, MLA Nandita Garlosa, senior AIUDF MLA Hafis Basir Ahmed, BPF MLA Rabiram Narzary, Congress MLAs Rakibul Hussain and Bharat Chandra Narah, and lone CPI-M MLA Manoranjan Talukdar also welcomed the new Speaker.
