GUWAHATI: The CID (Criminal Investigation Department) and the Crime Branch of the Assam Police have so far arrested three persons in the recent question paper-leak case during the examination for recruitment of State Police Sub Inspectors. While the CID raided the Hengrabari residence and a hotel of former DIG PK Dutta, the Crime Branch is grilling seven others.

With these developments, both the agencies have unearthed the modus operandi as to how the question paper was leaked.

Earlier on Sunday night, the Crime Branch had arrested Jugami Brahma alias Jugamaya — an employee of the State Irrigation department, in connection with the leakage of the question paper for the SI examination. The allegation against Jugamaya is that she assured jobs to a number of candidates in exchange of huge sums of money. The Crime Branch registered a case [(13/2020 u/s 418/420/120(B) of IPC] to this effect.

On the trail of this case, the Crime Branch arrested Kushal Das from Bamundi at Sualkuchi on Wednesday.

Based on the confessional statement of Das, the Crime Branch picked up another person from the Jyotinagar area under Noonmati Police Station here on Wednesday. The sleuths also detained six others including the owner of the 'Thank You Lodge' here at Ganeshguri for interrogation.

A number of admit cards, computer hard disks, writing boards and other documents were also seized from the lodge, the police said, adding that the seized documents are being examined.

According to the Crime Branch, the nexus was stitched by the racketeers on September 19 for the SI examination that was scheduled for September 20 but had to be declared cancelled.

Meanwhile in this context, the CID arrested Hirakjyoti Barua — a candidate for that examination on Wednesday. A resident of Karbi Anglong, he was picked up from Nagaon in CID case [(21/2020 u/s 120(B)/409 of IPC R/W Section 66(B) of IT]. Hirakjyoti collected the question paper and forwarded it to others, stated the CID.
