GUWAHATI: In the interest of smooth traffic movement, the State Government has added a new work—the construction of a trumpet interchange (grade separator) at the Gauripur junction of North Guwahati—to the ongoing six-lane bridge-cum-road project connecting Guwahati and North Guwahati across the Brahmaputra.

The trumpet interchange was not in the original project plan. Earlier, the project plan had the proposal of a T-type junction (at grade separator) on the national highway at Gauripur junction. The government later thought that the vehicles from Guwahati crossing the bridge over the Brahmaputra would face traffic congestion at Gauripur junction. And that made the government replace the T-type junction with a trumpet interchange at Gauripur junction in the plan so as to avoid any traffic congestion. For this trumpet interchange at Gauripur junction, the State PWD (EAP) calculated an estimated cost of Rs 255.62 crore and floated the tender.

According to PWD (EAP) sources, the department has stipulated a 12-month period for the construction of this trumpet interchange, besides a defect notification period of five years.

Meanwhile, the state’s first six-lane high-tech extradosed bridge over the river Brahmaputra is going on.

The bridge is being constructed under the Assam Bridge Project of the state PWD by SP Singla Constructions Pvt. Ltd. of Haryana in engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) mode. The total cost of the bridge is Rs 2,608.68 crore, and the funding agency is the New Development Bank (NDB). The main portion of the bridge will be 1.24 kilometres long. After crossing the bridge from Guwahati, the road will be six lanes up to Gauripur. The road is under construction now.
