BOKO: The local people of Chamaria found two rare species of river dolphins dead in the Morakolohi River in the Samaria area under Chamaria Revenue Circle on Thursday. The area falls under the jurisdiction of the Nagarbera River Forest office in the West Kamrup divisional office.

Many hours after information from the local people, a team from the Singra Forest Range office went to the spot and recovered the two dead dolphins. When people of the area questioned the forest team about the late response and illegal sand mining from the river, the Forest team allegedly did not respond. After that, the people of the area staged a protest against the Forest Department. They alleged that under the supervision of the Forest Department, some sand smugglers were mining sand from the river. Dolphins get hurt during mining and die, they alleged.

Meanwhile, the Boko State Veterinary conducted the post-mortem of the carcasses of two dolphins. West Kamrup Divisional Forest Officer Dimpi Bora said that the cause of death was unknown. They sent samples to the Veterinary College laboratory, Forensic Science Laboratory and another laboratory to find the cause of death.
