GUWAHATI: Talking about the flood and erosion problem of the State, Union Minister Smriti Irani has stated that the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) has taken a resolution to solve the problem with 'Mission Brahmaputra'.

Addressing a press meet here on Tuesday, Irani highlighted the saffron party's 'Mission Brahmaputra' under which the river will be dredged from Dhubri to Sadiya in a bid to treat the flood situation. The Union Minister underlined that under the Mission Brahmaputra various other initiatives will be taken along with construction of reservoirs in the flood-affected areas.

Irani underlined that along with the rest of the country, Assam is developing at a rapid pace under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"The people of Assam are determined to vote the BJP back to power. Due to the BJP-led government, the pace of development projects in Assam has been accelerated. When the Congress was in power, only Rs 2,400 crore was allocated for flood control. However, under the BJP regime, more than Rs 9,500 crore is being allocated every year for the same," Irani pointed out.

Further, she vehemently slammed the Congress for 'not taking' any initiative to open bank accounts for the poor. She highlighted that the Modi government has successfully opened bank accounts for scores of poor families under Jan Dhan Yojana.

"Through Orunodoi Scheme, Rs 830 is being given to 22 lakh women every month. After the BJP comes to power, the amount will be increased to Rs 3,000 every month," said Irani.

Taking pot shots at the Congress on issues of development, Irani said, "The BJP gives utmost priority to development. However, the Congress is trying to mislead the people from the path of development by forging alliance with the AIUDF. It is trying to survive in politics by taking support from the AIUDF. As both the parties are relying on each for survival, how will they be able to present a bright future for the State? AIUDF supremo Badruddin Ajmal aims to lock the State's future but he will not succeed because the key of development is with the people."

Lastly, she added, "Opposition parties cannot engage in a civilized discourse, debate or deliberation on development because of their miss conduct and miss rule in Assam during its regime. The miss rule of the Congress is not a distant memory but it is one of reasons that the people of Assam have decided not to vote for the Congress or the AIUDF."

Irani also questioned the Congress leadership as to why it has decided to forge alliance with the AIUDF as late Tarun Gogoi didn't find 'adequate capacity' in the AIUDF supremo to partner with the party.

"Why is the Congress leadership going against late Tarun Gogoi's decision?" Irani questioned.

Lastly, she added that the BJP has succeeded in bringing developmental dreams to reality, whether it's by setting up AIIMs in the State, constructing Bogibeel Bridge or providing ration to the poor amid the pandemic.
