GUWAHATI: The BPF (Bodoland People's Front) officially told Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma that it wanted to ally with the BJP. It also snapped ties with Congress.

Talking to The Sentinel, BPF general secretary Prabin Boro said, "We have taken a unanimous decision to ally with the BJP. We have already met the Chief Minister to this effect. We have told him that we don't want to be in the opposition camp.

"The Chief Minister told us that he wanted to work taking all. That response sounds positive. Now the ball is at the Chief Minister's court. Our party has authorized president Hagrama Mohilary to go ahead with the talks with the BJP. If the Chief Minister agrees to our proposal, we will reach an understanding with the BJP. If we fail to ally with the BJP, we will have to go solo in the bye-election. If there is an understanding with the BJP, the alignment in the coming bye-election will be different.

"We are no longer with the Congress-led Mahajoot. We have informed the new APCC (Assam Pradesh Congress Committee) president Bhupen Bora this, over the telephone."

The BJP-BPF alliance broke on the eve of the last BTC election when the BJP allied with the UPPL, and the BPF fought the poll alone.

During the last Assembly poll, while the BJP allied with the UPPL and the Gana Suraksha Party, the BPF was with the Congress-led Mahajoot.
