 CID probe of Dhula case termed as a benchmark

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Friday that the state government is ready to re-investigate any case of murder, rape, suicide etc., occurring in the last one year if the families of the victims or the public at large believe that the police investigation of the specific case was not satisfactory.

The Chief Minister's announcement came with reference to the re-investigation by the CID into the Dhula rape-cum-murder case, which unearthed the truth regarding falsification of evidence and has led to the arrest of police officers, a magistrate and three doctors.

Addressing mediapersons here, the Chief Minister said that the scientific way in which the CID reconstructed the crime – including exhumation of the deceased's body from the grave more than a month after burial and fresh forensic examination – has set a new benchmark for the Assam Police.

He said that the police has done its work and submitted charge sheets against the accused persons, and now the law will take its own course.

The Chief Minister informed that all Deputy Inspector Generals of Police (DIGs) and Superintendents of Police (SPs) have been instructed that no police station can close any case on its own if there is any public complaint regarding improper investigation by the police.

Sarma further cautioned all magistrates and doctors involved in investigation of crimes to discharge their duties honestly and diligently.

He informed that the re-investigation of the Dhula case was carried out because someone sent him a complaint over Twitter regarding improper investigation by the police. He said that he has consequently instructed the SPs to re-investigate any case where the public red flags 'grey areas'. He, however, clarified that all public allegations about unfair police probe may not be accurate, but there may be one or two more cases like the Dhula one.

When asked as to why police officers, magistrates and doctors all conspired to subvert justice in the Dhula case, Sarma said that this is a new trend in society. He added that all those involved in falsification of evidence are Assamese, and this type of mentality was not perceptible among Assamese people earlier, Therefore, there is a need for internal vigilance to check this new trend, he said.
