GUWAHATI: Back from a hectic poll campaign in Telengana, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has kick-started a drive among the workers of the BJP, AGP and the Gana Shakti, as a precursor to the 2024 Lok Sabha poll campaign. He has appealed to the workers of the three alliance parties to make the BJP win and place Narendra Modi in the Prime Minister’s chair for the third term in a row.
The Chief Minister went to Majuli in the morning on a two-day visit. He inspected the under construction Majuli-Jorhat Bridge and the Selek-Dhonaguri Bridge.
He then attended a rally of the BJP, AGP and the Gana Shakti in the river island. He appealed to the leaders and cadres of the three parties to work together to make the alliance win most of the Lok Sabha seats in the state. He said, “Before the delimitation of constituencies, the Majuli LAC (Legislative Assembly Constituency) segment was under the Lakhimpur Parliamentary Constituency. However, post-delimitation exercise, it has come under the Jorhat Parliamentary Constituency. With the Lok Sabha election round the corner, the electors of Majuli will have to exercise their franchise in the Jorhat Parliamentary constituency. The workers of all the alliance parties will have to work in unison to make the ruling alliance winner. We need to give more seats to Narendra Modi to make him Prime Minister for the third consecutive term.”
On the bridge over the Brahmaputra connecting Jorhat and Majuli, he said, “I inspected the work on the bridge today. The construction work has picked up pace despite initial delays. We expect to dedicate this bridge to the people of the state in April 2026. The work of the Selek-Dhunaguri bridge connecting Majuli and Lakhimpur is also progressing well. We expect to meet the December 2025 schedule.”
Speaking to the media, the Chief Minister said, “Twenty percent of the construction work of the Majuli-Jorhat bridge is over, and we hope to complete 35 percent of the work before the flood season. The bridge has 72 wells. The work on the wells is going on, barring that on two of them. All should pray for the timely completion of the bridge. We also need to construct the roads to connect to the bridge. The connecting roads may cost around Rs 400 crore. We will try to start the work of the connecting roads next year, so as to complete them along with the bridge at the same time.”
The construction of the Majuli-Jorhat bridge on the Brahmaputra, with an estimated cost of Rs 650 crore, began on November 29, 2021.
In the evening, the Chief Minister witnessed several Raax Kriras in the River Island.
