Will generate 5,000 MW of power by 2030: Assam Power General Corporation Ltd

APGCL (Assam Power General Corporation Ltd) has targeted to generate around 5,000 MW of power by 2030.

GUWAHATI: APGCL (Assam Power General Corporation Ltd) has targeted to generate around 5,000 MW of power by 2030. At present, APGCL produces around 230 MW of power daily against its capacity of 443.2 MW.

Talking to The Sentinel, an APGCL official said, "We have taken up 14 new projects to raise our power generation capacity to 4652.5 MW by 2030. While the construction works of five of the 14 new projects are going on, the other nine are in the pipeline. The projects under construction are the 120-MW Lower Kopili Hydroelectric Project with projected completion by June 2024, 70-MW Amguri Solar Project nearing completion, 25-MW Namrup Solar Project, 24-MW Karbi Langpi Middle Stage-II Project and 22.5-MW Karbi Langpi Middle State I Project."

According to the official, the nine projects in the pipeline are 2X800-MW Margherita Thermal Power Project, 100-MW Namrup Replacement Power Project Phase-II, 100-MW Namrup Gas Engine Power Project, 60-MW Sonbeel Floating Solar Project in Karimganj, 20-MW Majuli Solar Power Project, 11-MW Chandrapur Waste-to-Energy Project, 3x250-MW Chandrapur Gas Based Power Project, 4X250-MW Gas Turbine Combine Cycle Power Project in Lower Assam and 3x250-MW Gas Turbine Combine Cycle Power Project at Amguri.

According to the official, the daily power demand in Assam in peak hours is 1,874 MW and 1,283 MW in off-peak hours. Since APGCL produces only around 230 MW of power daily, the APDCL (Assam Power Distribution Corporation Ltd) meets the remaining demand from other sources.

The six operational power plants in the state are 64.5-MW Namrup Thermal Power Station, 98.4-MW Namrup Replacement Power Project Phase – I, 97.2-MW Lakwa Thermal Power Station, 70-MW Lakwa Replacement Power Project, 100-MW Karbi Langpi Hydroelectric Project and 13.5-MW Myntriang Small Hydro-Electric Project Stage-I and Stage-II.

Power generation largely depends on water, coal, and other fuel availability.
