GUWAHATI: Barely two years remain for the target schedule of PMAY-U (Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban). However, even four years after launching of the yojana, only 17.6 per cent houses under four different categories have been given occupation till December 2019. Against the backdrop of the slow pace of this scheme in Assam, it remains to be seen as to whether the State will be able to meet the target schedule of ‘Housing for All’.
The PMAY-U was launched in 2015 with a view to provide affordable houses to the urban poor by March 31, 2022. The target schedule is just two years away.
According to PMAY-U Mission sources in the State, only 96,972 houses have been sanctioned against 1,72,226 applications received till December 31, 2019 in the State. While only 17,091 of the 96,972 sanctioned houses have been allocated to the beneficiaries so far, 34,973 sanctioned houses are still under construction.
PMAY-U houses are allotted in as many as 98 urban areas in the State in four different categories – the BLC (Beneficiary-led individual house construction or enhancement), the CLSS (Credit-linked subsidy scheme), the ISSR (‘In-situ’ Slum Re-development) and the AHP (Affordable Housing in Partnership) – with a view to making ‘housing for all’ by March 31, 2022 a reality.
