GUWAHATI: Outgoing Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has appealed to the NDA legislators to keep in mind that "a country isn't for the king, but the king is for the country".
Addressing the NDA Legislature Party meeting at the Assam Assembly on Sunday, Sonowal said, "The past five years of the BJP-led NDA government at Dispur was a success. The people of the State were elated at the development and other activities of the government, and that let the alliance make it to Dispur again.
"Every legislator has to rise to the people's expectation and work selflessly and honestly. Instead of laying stress on your interests, you should do everything for the interests of the people you represent.
"In the past five years, we fought against corruption without any compromise. The people of the State did support that. I hope, in the coming five years also our fight against corruption will remain intact.
"We need to win the fight against the second wave of COVID-19.
"I thank the legislature parties of the BJP, AGP and the UPPL for electing Himanta Biswa Sarma as the NDA Legislature Party Leader. I believe that Sarma will lead the Government efficiently and take all with him. I have that faith in him. I also believe that under his leadership the development of Barak, Brahmaputra, hills and plains of Assam will remain intact. He is experienced enough. I also believe that Assam will be self-reliant and one of the best states in the country under his leadership.
"Himanta Biswa Sarma is like my brother. I've affection for him. We need to work together."
Sonowal also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for taking Assam towards the development trajectory in the past years.
