Aung San Suu Kyi, winner of Nobel Peace Prize 1991 have been detained by Myanmar's military in the capital Naypyidaw in the early hours of Feb 1, just before the Parliament was supposed to reconvene for the first time since the November 2020 elections.

On Monday, the military imposed a one-year state of emergency while detaining democratically elected President Win Myint, Suu Kyi, and at least 42 officials, and 16 civil society activists.

Aung San Suu Kyi has been in prison or under house arrest off and on for 15 years since 1989, but the military justified its seize on Monday by alleging fraud in the November elections where Suu Kyi's party won in a landslide.

Detained Ms Suu Kyi's whereabouts is currently unknown, but in its television address the military said all leaders would be detained for a year.
