Nazira is a town located in Sivasagar district Assam. It is a historical town on the bank of the river Dawki. The distance between Nazira and Sivasagar city is around 18 km from Samaluguri Jn. It's almost 78 km from Jorhat Airport. Nazira is also the Sub-divisional Head Office of the Nazira Sub-division. At the time of the Ahom Kingdom, Nazira was an important place. Some of the portions of Nazira are mostly occupied by the Ahoms.

Other people residing in Naziraare Assamese Muslims, Brahmins, Koch, Kalitas, DeoriesKaibarta and tea tribes. According to the legends, Nazira got its name from the word 'Now -Jeera', which means the resting place of boats in Assamese.

The current Lok sabha member from Jorhat is Topon Kumar Gogoi.

District

Nazira is a town in the Sivasagar district of Assam. Sivasagar is one of the 34 districts and one of Assam's cleanest towns. It is also known as Sibsagar. The administrative headquarter of this district is Sibsagar city. On the 1st of July, this district celebrates Sivsagar Day, and the people celebrate the day by conducting cultural programs, cultural rallies and plantation programs. The river Brahmaputra surrounds the district to the north, Nagaland to its south, the Charaideo to its east and the river Jhansi to the west.

There are a total of 124 villages in Nazira Tehsil. Some of the towns with a high population are Hatsoi Grant-I with a 10993 population, Na-Pam Baruoti with 4731 people, Adpuria with 4537 people, Mathurapur Grant with 4435 people, Garmur Miri with 4175 people and Hatsoi Grant-II with 4086 people.

Assembly Status

In the Assembly election of 2016, the Nazira constituency had a total number of 118794 voters, and among them, the total number of valid voters was 97994. In the election, Debabrata Saikia, who belongs to the Indian National Party, won the election with 52869 total votes by defeating a Bharatiya Janata Party named Prohlad Gowala 38,014 votes.

 According to the 2011 census report, Nazira has a total population of 1,97,618, and out of this population, 1,01463 are males, and 96155 are females. The total number of families living in the Nazira circle is 43945 families. And out of the total population, 10.9% of people live in urban areas, and 89.1% live in rural areas. The number of literate persons in Nazira is 140660, from which 76823 are male, and 63837 are female.

Muslims have a total population of 23752, from which 12106 are male, and 11646 are female. The Christians have a population of 2194 male and 2108 female, and the Sikhs have a total of 90 population, out of which 51 are male and 39 females.
