Jonai is an easternmost sub-division in the district of Dhemaji of Assam. The district is surrounded by Arunachal Pradesh in the north, Lali & Brahmaputra Rivers in the south, Sipiya river and Sadiya Subdivision of Tinsukia district in the east and the river Simen in the west. It covers a total geographical area of 1111.81 km and is about 554 km away from Guwahati.

Jonai Assembly Constituency bears constituency number 114 of the Assam Assembly. It is located in the Dhemaji district and is a part of Lakhimpur Lok Sabha Constituency. The seat has been reserved for the Scheduled Tribes (ST). Bhubon Pegu, an Independent candidate, won the Assam LegislativeAssembly election in 2016. His closest rival was Aswini Pait of the BJP party.

Lakhimpur Parliamentary constituency is made up of 9 assembly constituencies -- Dhakuakhana (1), Dhemaji (1), Dibrugarh (1), Jonai (1), Lakhimpur (2), Majuli (1), Sadiya (1), Tinsukia (1). Pradan Baruah of BJP party in the Lok Sabha election of 2019 won with 774017 votes and the runner up was Anil Borgohain of INC party.


District

Jonai is a town in Dhemaji District occupying an area of 3,237 sqkm. The district has a populaton of 686,133 according to the 2011 Census. The main religious groups in Jonai are Hindus comprising 548,780, Muslims -- 10,533 and Christians are around 6,390. Dhemaji became a full-fledged district on 14 October 1989 earlier it was merged in the Lakhimpur District. It is placed in the foothills of the lower Himalayas and is relatively a small town compared to other towns in Assam.
