Sonari, a district headquarter, is a mid-size town and a municipal board in Charaideo district, which was announced by former Assam Chief Minister late Tarun Gogoi in the year 2015 august. There are about 226 villages and one town in Sonari. The nearby railway station is Bhojo. Several tea gardens are there in the town.

The Assam Legislative Assembly has 126 seats. Sonari is one of the 126 assembly constituencies of the Assam Legislative Assembly. The Assembly Constituency name is Sonari Assembly Constituency and its number is 106.

Sonari Assembly Constituency falls under Jorhat Lok Sabha Constituency, and there is no reservation in the Assembly constituency for the reserved categories. 

District

Sonari is a mid-size town in the district of Charaideo Assam state and comes under the Upper Assam division. The name Charaideo originated from the word Che Rai Doi or Doi Che Rai, a Tai-Ahom word that means shining city on the hills. It is known for collecting maidams, tumuli or burial mounds of the Ahom kings and Ahom royalty. On 15 August, 2015, Charaideo district was formally declared a new district by Tarun Gogoi, the then Chief Minister of Assam.

There is one town in Nazira circle that is Sonari. The number of people residing in this town according to the 2011 Census is 19,810.

The total number of villages under Sonari constituency is 226 villages. From these 226 villages, the most populated village is Towkok Grant No.2, with 17,129 population, & the village with the lowest population is Khokon Pothar F.V with only 16 population.

Some villages with a high population are Kathia Khunda No.1 with 9303 people, Tingalibam T.G with 6373 people, Naharhabi Grant & Lakwa Rly. Stn with 5969 people, Teok Gaon with 5533 people and Ranga Pothar with 5406 people.

Assembly Status

In the 2016 assembly election, the Sonari constituency had a total number of 1,51,669 voters, and out of this, the number of voter turnout is 1,31,014. In the 2016 Assembly election, BJP candidate Topon Kumar Gogoi won the seat with 73,327 votes, and the runner up INC candidate Sarat Barkataky got 49210 votes.

According to the 2011 Census report, total people of Sonari is 3,25,056, out of this population, the number of male population is 166454 and female is 158601. The number of people who live in town areas are 20059, among which 10119 is male, and 9940 are female and the total number of people living in the villages are 126042 among which 64326 is the number of male and 61716 are female. The number of households in Sonari is 69109. The total number of literate persons is 204305 and out of this 114902 is male literates and 89403 are female literates.

Development/Work Done in Last Five Years By The Candidates

The 'Sonari Town Water Supply Scheme', a scheme implemented by Assam Urban Water Supply and Sewerage Board was launched. The main aim of this scheme is to supply clean water for drinking and also for using it for other purposes.

Several road projects have been developed including roads of Haripora, Desangmukh, Disangmukh road, under the Assam Government's State Self-Priority Scheme in 2020-2021 with 10 Crore rupees. Development work of Disangmukh Ali was also undertaken.
