Assam Agricultural University (AAU) professor found hanging in office chamber

JORHAT: A senior professor from Assam Agricultural University (AAU), Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Agronomy, Jorhat Campus, was found hanging at his office chamber on Tuesday. He has been identified to be one Dr. Abhijit Sharma who hails from Amguri under Sivasagar district, said Dr. Jayanta Deka, Dean, AAU here. Dr. Deka said that he was a super teacher and a brilliant academician from the Department of Agronomy, AAU, and some baseless allegations had forced him to leave a note on his table that he was charged unnecessarily over harassment to senior female students.

Following the death of Dr. Abhijit Sharma, a special enquiry committee has been constituted to inquire about the incident.

Dr. Deka, the Dean of AAU, further said that Dr. Sharma did not have any weakness or illicit affair and nobody from the university could accuse him for having any relation with the opposite sex. Following the suicide note, a strict investigation over his death will certainly reveal the truth.

Moreover, a section of teachers and senior students from the department is likely to be called for interrogation as the law will take its own course, said sources from the department on Tuesday.
