Guwahati: Senior Advocate and Convenor Prabajan Virodhi Manch Upamanyu Hazarika on Wednesday alleged that Ajit Bhuyan’s candidature is sponsored by the Congress and the AIUDF parties.
In a press communiqué, Hazarika said, “Ajit Bhuyan putting forth his candidature for the Rajya Sabha is exercising a democratic right which the Constitution confers upon every citizen and cannot be faulted. However, when he dresses up his candidature as being representative of the sentiments and interests of the indigenous people, it turns into extreme hypocrisy as his candidature is sponsored by the Congress and the AIUDF.”
Hazarika also questioned since when have the Congress and the AIUDF been representing indigenous interests? Rather, they have been always representing Bangladeshi/immigrant interests. “He has cleverly sought to dress up his candidature in the garb of representing anti-CAA forces, but if CAA is opposed by the indigenous people as thrusting more foreigners upon the State equally the AIUDF which represents Bangladeshi migrant Muslims along with the Congress is antithetical and opposed to indigenous interests. Both these parties have sought the grant of citizenship to all infiltrators from Bangladesh into Assam up to 2015. It is Bangladeshi Muslims alone who will become a majority by 2040 and who have driven out indigenous from their homelands in Lower and Middle Assam,” added Hazarika in his press statement.
Hazarika further mentioned that in this situation, for Bhuyan to profess that he is representing indigenous interests and sentiments is hypocritical and self-serving. “Over the last 40 years, the indigenous in Assam have been on an endless and a futile quest for parties/leaders to represent them and Bhuyan is only the last in the continuing series of leaders who show no compunction in betraying indigenous interests to advance their own political career,” Upamanyu Hazarika added further.
