Assam teacher granted bail; he was arrested for making offensive remarks on Modi & Hindus

GUWAHATI: Souradeep Sengupta, guest lecturer in physics at the Gurucharan College was granted bail by a Silchar court.

He was given bail on a surety amount of Rs 15,000. He is also required to cooperate with the police. Sengupta cannot leave the town without the court's permission.

Sengupta was arrested by the police from his residence a few days ago for his provocative posts in social media. His most inciting and defamatory posts on Facebook and WhatsApp as well as other social media stunned civil society, the teaching, and student fraternity, raising questions about his very intent and purpose. Is he a cog in the wheel of anti-Indian forces? Or is he a part of the pan Islamic design to spread a communal virus in this remote part of the country?

His posts read “BJP and RSS are trying to recreate Godhra in Delhi right now. People on the street are getting their IDs checked to see if they are Muslims. If they are, they are getting beaten up mercilessly. Hindu houses are being marked by saffron flags while Muslim houses and mosques are being petrol-bombed. All the while, these terrorists shout Jai Sri Ram. Sanatan Dharma my foot.”

The posts further read, “We elected a mass murderer twice as a PM. This is what we get. Everyone who voted for BJP should know they sold the country off for a few bucks.”

Sengupta was arrested on the basis of the FIR filed by a group of students – Sunny Chanda, Rohit Chanda, Souvik Bhattacharjee, Bhargava Bhattacharjee, and Karanjeet Deb, at the Sadar police station. The police filed a case against Sengupta u/s 295/153(a) and 507 IPC and 66 of IT Act.

Students gathered outside his house and hurled abuses at his family while accusing them of not bringing him up well.

After the teacher was slammed for his remarks, he posted an apology in which he said, “I made some irresponsible comments about a communally sensitive issue. It was a lapse of judgment…My intention was not to insult any religion at large.”

A mob which gathered outside his house got quite upset to not find idols or pictures of Hindu gods and goddesses inside Sengupta’s home.

“They were loud and kept on asking what kind of Hindus they were, if there were no photos of gods on their portico,” a relative of the teacher said.

According to reports, the mob was shouting ‘Jai Shri Ram’ slogans while they forced their way into the house of the teacher.
