Manipur Insurgency: Rs 48 lakh Meant for KCP Terror Funding Seized by NIA

Imphal: In a major breakthrough in thwarting any terror attacks in Manipur, The National Investigation Agency (NIA) seized Rs 48 lakh from a suspected woman on Saturday. NIA officials recovered the amount while they were investigating the activities of the banned terror outfit Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP).

The breakthrough was made while the National Investigation Agency was probing into the terrorist activities of the KCP and particularly related to the March 2017 case under Sections 120B of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and 20 of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

Police sources informed that the money was seized from one identified as K Pramodini who is an employee of RIMS Imphal Manipur. It was produced by Pramodini in the presence of independent witnesses.

Reportedly, the amount belongs to N Sobita Devi, wife of accused Dr. Mutum Shyamo Singh who is the former Director of JNIMS Hospital in Imphal.

Upon further investigation, NIA found out that Rs 48 lakh in cash was handed over to Pramodini by Sobita Devi for the purpose of covering up the terror funds that Mutum Shyamo Singh collected on behalf of the terror outfit KCP.

It may be mentioned that the NIA had earlier arrested Mutum Shyamo Singh on July 6 this year for his alleged active involvement in KCP.

A massive search operation by the NIA team was conducted and several places were raided. During that period NIA recovered Rs 40,03,000 in the new currency and Rs 1,00,000 in old currency in his house which was also seized as they were meant to be utilized in terror funding and insurgency activities in the state.

As per reports in the media, the NIA during the course of investigation arrested accused persons Khoirom Ranjit Singh, Commander in Chief of KCP, and his associates - Irungbam Sanatombi Devi and P. Prem Kumar Meitei.

Police informed that a charge sheet has also been filed on July 10, 2017, at the NIA Special Court in Delhi. The NIA team is further investigating into the case under Section 173(8) of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC).
