CHATTISGARH: A special team comprising 32 women commandos has been formed to tackle Naxalism in the Naxal-affected Sukma district of Chhattisgarh.

Speaking to media persons, Sukma Superintendent of Police Sunil Sharma said the team which has been termed as "Durga Fighters" has been constituted to battle https://www.sentinelassam.com/national-news/naxalism-will-end-in-next-three-five-years-rajnath-singh/and exterminate the anti-social elements from the district. The women who have been recruited will be given training for one month, he said.

He said they (police authorities) are happy to inform that the selected women fighters met the officials on the auspicious occasion of Raksha Bandhan to constitute the District Reserve Force (DRG) team for them. The proposal has been given a green signal and the team will be termed as "Durga Fighters" which will have 32 female staff. They are going to be trained for commando duty for a month and they will perform all active duties, he said.

The Sukma SP mentioned that the idea behind an all-women force is to promote gender equality. "Women are equal to men," he added.

The captain of 'Durga Fighters' Asha Sen said the force has taken the oath to make Sukma a "Naxal-free region". She added that they have pledged to free Sukma from Naxalism and protect the people of the district from Naxalites. "We now feel equal to men as we have been given a place in District Reserve Guards (DRG) team," she said.

The southernmost district in eastern India's Chhattisgarh state, Sukma is located in the Bastar region. It shares borders with three states including Odisha (Malkangiri district), Telangana (Bhadradri Kothagudem district) and Andhra Pradesh (East Godavari district). The district is one of the least developed districts of India. Naxalism has been a major problem in the district over the past many years.
