Nagaon: The Nagaon Police on Tuesday seized around 113 grams of brown sugar and apprehended two persons in connection to the incident.

The two accused were identified as Anwara Khatun and Dildar Hussain.

An operation was launched by Nagaon Police under the supervision of Nagaon Police Station officer in charge Gauravjyoti Mahanta at a residence of one Ruful Amin of West Narmari, following which police also recovered around 200 blank containers and cash Rs 4100 from the possession of the accused Dildar Hussain and Anwara Khatun.

Kongres Moran, a resident of Tokopather village in Mohong area under Bordumsa Police Station in Tinsukia district, was arrested along with his daughter-in-law Ranjita Moran by a joint team of Bordumsa Police and Margherita circle Excise Department on July 9 from their hotel in Bordumsa market area following the recovery of 19 sachets (packets) of suspected brown sugar from their possession.

Based on a tip-off, the team conducted a sudden raid in the hotel and recovered the suspected contraband from their hotel located in a controversial fish market from where hotel owner-turned-drug peddler Radha Moran, the wife of Amal Moran, along with two others -Ashim Konwar and Guna Bora – were arrested earlier on June 19 and subsequently booked under section 385 of IPC, r/w 21 (b) of NDPS Act at Bordumsa police station. Three police constables attached to Bordumsa Police Station were also suspended the same day for their alleged involvement in extorting money from the arrested peddlers against the safe release of the drug traffickers.

Meanwhile, Kongres Moran and his daughter-in-law are under legal custody and will be taken by the excise team to Margherita for further investigation. The statement of the excise team was awaited till filing of this report. One of the police officials in Bordumsa, who was part of the operation, said that the police had earlier seized and destroyed a large quantity of illegal foreign liquor several times from the hotel and the peddler was constantly in the cops' radar. "Nineteen packets of suspected drug material were seized during the operation and the case is being handled by the excise department," said the police official.
