Aadhaar verdict: Supreme Court declares Aadhaar scheme as Constitutionally valid; UIDAI not mandatory for CBSE, NEET

In the latest update of Aadhaar Verdict the Supreme Court today declared the centre's flagship Aadhaar scheme as Constitutionally valid. The Supreme court's five-judge Constitution bench stated Aadhaar means unique and it is better to be unique than being best.

The court, nonetheless, ruled Section 57 to be unconstitutional.

Section 57 authorizes any "body corporate or person" or private entity to demand Aadhaar. These corporates comprise telecom companies, banks, etc.

The Supreme Court made this declaration while announcing of the verdict by a five-judge Constitution bench led by Chief Justice Dipak Misra.

The Bench said national security exception for disclosure of Aaadhaar information as per Seciton 33(2) has been annulled.

The bench also announced CBSE, NEET cannot mandate Aadhaar.

The Apex Court also said Aadhaar collects “minimum possible data” and gives identity to marginalized sections.

According to News 18 of the five-judge bench presiding over the case, three judges penned separate judgments on the validity of Aadhaar.

A major part of the verdict is read out by Justice Sikri.

Earlier a five-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra, reserved its verdict in the case on May 10 after a 38-day hearing.

Aadhaar is a 12-digit unique identification number that can be acquired by residents of India, based on their biometric and demographic data.
