Guwahati: In a major development to the alleged looting case by Assistant Sub-Inspector from Dispur Police Nipu Kalita, Guwahati Commissioner of Police, Deepak Kumar informed the Sentinel Digital that the officer had been arrested by the Dispur Police on Wednesday evening.
The sub-inspector from Dispur police station was earlier suspended for allegedly stealing 60 gold biscuits from police custody in the month of January. The market value of the 60 gold biscuits is said to be around Rs 4 crore.
Commissioner of Police, Deepak Kumar also informed that Nipu Kalita had surrendered himself today at the Basistha police and was later shifted to Dispur Police Station for further interrogations.
Reportedly, the sub-inspector, earlier after allegedly stealing the gold biscuits, Kalita managed to escape from the police station. It is to be noted that he was absconding since January 15.
The police report also claims that two other police officials were also involved in the incident.
The accomplices of the sub-inspector Kalita were identified as constable Faijur Rahman and Home Guard Afjal Ali.
It may also be mentioned that earlier a case was also registered in Dispur Police Office. Moreover, three people have also given statements in connection to this case under CrPC 164.
The smugglers who had stolen the goods in the first place reported the incident on February 4, 2019.
Furthermore, the statements of the smugglers were also recorded before the court, informed the Commissioner of Police Deepak Kumar.
