Guwahati: The Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS), Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) along with 44 organisations have called a 12-hour bandh state-wide protest against the Centre's bid to pass the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, in the Winter Session of Parliament. The KMSS and AJYCP led bandh has crippled normalcy across the state with protesters squatting on railway tracks, burning tyres and shouting slogans demanding shutdown over Citizenship Bill on Tuesday. However, police officials reportedly evicted them.

As per reports, demonstrators also burnt tyres on roads in various places of Assam. Meanwhile, Police officials said here that the demonstrators, who were trying to prevent train movement by squatting on tracks, were being evicted and escorts were being provided to public transport vehicles to ensure smooth functioning of the transport services.

All district magistrates and superintendents of police had been instructed by the BJP government in the state to take measures to maintain public utility services in view of the bandh call.
Reportedly, various political parties, including the Congress, have shown their support towards the bandh. Political parties, including the Congress and the AIUDF, have extended their support to the bandh in the interest of Assam and its indigenous people.
It needs to be mentioned here that the Asom Gana Parishad which is a partner of the BJP-led alliance government in the state, will hold a rally in the later part of the day today to register its protest against the JPC's proposed meeting with the MEA and MHA. At least 50,000 people are expected to participate in the rally.
